The port of Dakar , located on the westernmost coast of Africa ,

is at the crossroad between Europe , North America , South America

and sub-Sahara Africa .

Built on a natural crew reef, well protected from Atlantic swell,

it provides excellent shelter to ships, and ensures safe access at all times.

It has been open to commercial traffic since 1865.

The port handles 91% of the total value of Senegal’s foreign trade,

with a turnover of FCFA 12.3 billions in 1999 and FCFA 13.2 billions in 2000 (7.31% increase).

The port of Dakar is :

-     3600 miles from Cape Town

-     2377 miles from le Havre ( France )

EQUIPMENT

Include factories, refrigerated warehouses, freezing plants and processing industries for fish products

It is also equipped with:

-     naval repair infrastructure and building site (one of the best in West Africa )

-     25 km of tracks linked to national and international railways

Harbour activities are managed by the public sector and the private sector divided up as follows

THE PUBLIC SECTOR

The public sector is responsible for:

-        b nautical quality and .basic ship services (piloting, towing, signaling, dragging, beacons, etc)

-        security of goods and persons

-        coordination of all operators to optimise quality of service and traffic's fluidity

All other services are provided by the private sector. Several private operators including S.D.V, Maerskllne, Somicoa, Antrac, Csttao, and Itoc, are responsible for ship and import/export services (holds, dock work, consignment, transit, demand of harbour facilities, etc.)

  THE PILOTING SERVICE

The piloting service is available around the clock and counts with:

-        12 pilots

-        5 pilot cutters

-        8 mooring berths

Owing to the harbours exceptionally good nautical conditions, towage is optional. Five tug boats, all equipped with fire proof devices,. are available if towage is desired.

 

SECURITY

Security is ensured by operational control on:

-        water plan

-        pollution and fire prevention and control

-        inner an outer water areas patrol

A new multifunctional antipollution motor boat V.A.P "YEN ", equipped with anti-fire devices, is in service.

-        10000 cbm for refined hydrocarbons

 STEVEDORING

Stevedoring is available to operate non geared vessels and any other

type of vessels. Parking instruments of all types are also available.

The stocking capacities can easily meet operators' requirements for all . kinds of goods:

-        53637 sq meters of sheds

-        117 000 sq meters of open area

-        170600 sq meters for containers

The average tariffs for freight of 20 and 40 feet containers are: FCFA 1,64 millions and FCFA 2,55 millions respectively for USA destination and FCFA 0.9 millions and FCFA 1.85 millions respectively for European destination (catalogue prices). These tariffs are priced 30% below pre­vailing market rates.

SEA LINKS

Eleven separate operators ensure the sea link from Dakar Port to Europe with port of call varying from 3 to 12 by month.

 One operator ensures the sea link from Dakar port to the USA with an average of 3 port of call per month.

 The Dakar port also ensure a transit traffic to Mali evaluated at 241000 tons, and representing 4% of total traffic.
